Cash back vs points vs miles

Cash back is the simplest: you earn a flat or tiered percentage of every purchase back as cash, usually redeemable as a statement credit or direct deposit. Points are a flexible currency, often redeemable for cash, travel, gift cards, or merchandise, with the value per point varying by redemption method. Miles are typically travel-focused, either tied to a specific airline or, with some cards, transferable to multiple airline and hotel partners.
A worked example
A $100 grocery purchase on a 2% cash back card earns you $2, straightforward. The same purchase on a points card earning 2x points might earn 200 points, worth anywhere from $1 to $4 depending on how you redeem them, points redeemed for cash are usually worth less than points redeemed for travel through the issuer's portal or transferred to a partner airline.
Why it matters when choosing a card
Cash back is the right default if you want simplicity and guaranteed value. Points and miles can be worth more, sometimes significantly more, but only if you're willing to learn the redemption rules and actually use them for travel. If you're not going to put in that effort, a cash back card will usually get you more real value for less hassle.
